Chapter 21. Cami

I covered my tracks. I hope.

As I head out of the wine cellar, Mr. Fowler stays clear of the door like he wants nothing to derail me. “Good evening, Cami.”

“Evening, Mr. Fowler.” My voice sizzles a little as I say it.

Without the charm, it would probably make the average person cringe, like the sound of a nail scratching against dry skin. But it does nothing, apart from making my heart sink a little. I only just got my powers. A part of them. And yet after only a few hours without my banshee powers, I already miss them.

I walk back through the shed, listening for the exchange between the hunters, but they don’t speak much until I’m out of earshot. Mr. Fowler knows what I’m capable of. Out on the street, my clumsy walk through the snow, mixed with the random noise from each of the neighboring houses, makes it hard to pick out the conversation between the Fowlers. I stop trying. I’m not sure I want to hear that.

But my senses pick out something else. The screech of the gate to the Gianni’s yard as it opens. I wait on the street for Jean. She walks so smoothly; she might as well be gliding on the ice.

“You didn’t have to stay outside this whole time,” I say when she’s at my side.

“I did too.” Jean sounds as serious as ever. “I’m not sure how far the range of the charm is, and their house is massive.”

“Thanks,” I say.

It doesn’t even cover it. The plan worked. I didn’t banshee out in front of Mason. I was normal with him, despite, I might add, the nasty surprise of discovering I paid for the charm by bearing Jean’s weaknesses when I’m around Mason. But no matter, I promptly concealed that vervain-infused wine burn. Now I want to tell Jean all about it.

“You don’t have to look at me with those puppy eyes.” She squints at me like I’m crazy. “I don’t even feel the cold, remember?”

I let out a giggle. “It’s not that. It’s just...” I can’t believe I’m about to do this. “Jean, would you like to come in?”
